5/9/17 – Giants at Mets –
The Mets got on the board early after T.J. Rivera would get on with a one out single. Jay Bruce would follow Rivera with a double that would advance the second baseman Rivera to third base on the play.
After being crowned as the “king of the Game” the night before, Neil Walker would hit a sinking hit that would get under & by left fielder Eduardo Nunez to give Walker a 2-run triple to put the Mets up. Reyes followed with an RBI single up the middle right before Rene Rivera smoked a double over the center fielders head to plate Rivera.
Samardzija would finally put an end to the inning but getting Wilmer Flores to fly out to center field after 8 men would come to bat, putting the Mets up by 4, going into the second inning.
After Wheeler walked Christian Arroyo on a two out 8 pitch walk, Wheeler was able to end the second inning by inducing a comebacker from Eduardo Nunez.
After falling behind 0-2 to Samardzija, Conforto would run the count full before rocketing a double into right center field on the 11th pitch of the at bat which counted as his fourth of the year. T.J. Rivera would also fall behind 0-2 before he drove a pitch off the left center field wall for a double of his own, allowing Conforto to score the fifth run of the game for the Mets in just the second inning.
Samardzija would then strike out Jay Bruce & Neil Walker as they strand Rivera on second to end the inning for the Giants with his first two strike outs of the game.
After the Bruce Bochy & the Giants lost a challenge to start off the top of the fourth. Buster Posey would take a 0-1 slider over the left field wall to cut the Mets lead over the Giants to 5-1.
After going six innings, Wheeler would be pinch hit for in the bottom of the sixth, ending his night after throwing 95 pitches on the evening. In the six innings, Wheeler struck out four while walking four & giving up just two hits, one of which being a Buster Posey homer as the only dent in Wheeler’s line.
Hansel Robles would pitch a scoreless seventh to follow. Conforto then lead off the bottom of the seventh, belting a hanging slider over the right center field wall, the first home for the Mets that evening extending the lead to 6-1.
That would be all the Mets would need to secure the win against the Giants as the Mets would keep the good baseball going over the last week & a half or so.
