Pete Alonso regains the Major League lead

New York Mets rookie first baseman Pete Alonso hit his 46th and 47th home-run this evening to retake the lead over Mike Trout and the rest of league. The home runs have put Alonso on pace to hit 53 home runs on the season, which would break New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge’s Major League record.

Alonso is now batting .270/.369/.599/.968 and hit both of tonight’s home runs off of fellow rookie Merrill Kelly.

The New York Mets slugger also has 142 hits, tying him with Jay Payton for hits in a season by a rookie and needs 5 more knocks to surpass Ty Wigginton.

After a 3-1 win over the Diamondbacks, Alonso had this to say on potentially breaking the rookie home run record, “Really, the [biggest] thing, I just want to make the playoffs. That is something we still have a chance to do and I still think making the playoffs would be the most rewarding experience ever.”
