Betances on Mets Spring debut

The big news with Dellin Betances is not that he took 24 pitches to get one out. The problem with his debut on Saturday was his velocity.

Now, it was his debut of the spring so we shouldn’t exactly expect him to to paint the corners with pitches in the upper 90’s. However, Betances was topping out at 90MPH and Mets Twitter seems to be concerned.

Betances said after his outing, “It was good… I was just making sure everything felt good. That was my biggest concern. I felt a little out of whack but… I came out healthy which is the number one key for me.”

“This is how he works in Spring Training.” said newly signed manager Luis Rojas. “His history is that he always works at this velocity and keeps ramping it up closer to the season, outing per outing.” Rojas added.

“We spoke a little bit in the dugout after the outing. He was pleased with the performance in terms of going in there, ramping up intensity, throwing over to first base… doing different things at a competitive level.” Rojas continued to tell reporters.

“I just have to trust everything is going to be there… I didn’t pitch all of last year but two outs, and this offseason was different than the normal offseason, rehabbing the ankle. I just have to trust it’s there, continue to progress and get out there as much as I can before the season.”

Betances is slated to be a pivotal part of the backend of the Mets bullpen after making his way over from the teams crosstown rivals.
