Mets agree to deal with Jacob Barnes

The Mets have signed Jacob Barnes to an one year deal worth $750k. Barnes was claimed thru waivers earlier this off-season and was eligible for arbitration. Barnes could also get 100.000 extra in incentives. In the arbitration process you can’t include incentives, so this is not technically avoiding arbitration.

Barnes is coming off a dissapointing couple of seasons after being a very good reliever from ’16-’18. Over just 18 innings, he pitched to a 5.50 ERA during the 2020 season. However, it’s worth mentioning that a relievers ERA could be very deceiving, especially in a short sample.

Barnes did pitch to a 2.25FIP and 1.27WHIP, both very strong. He walked just 4 batters in 18 innings and struck out 24, so the ability is there. Barnes could be a nice under the radar pick-up that added depth for the Mets at a low cost.

Barnes doesn’t have options so he’ll likely get every shot to make the opening day squad.
