Free Agent Target: Jedd Gyorko

With all the free agent and trade target posts we have done on MetsJunkies, it’s time to look at the lesser attractive potential targets that are avaliable this offseason. Yesterday I wrote about Enrique (Kike) Hernandez, today it’s Jedd Gyorko his turn.

Why would he be a fit? It all depends on other moves this offseason, but Gyorko could be an option to man third base for the Mets. The 32 year old is coming off a solid year with the Brewers in 2020. Over 42 games Gyorko hit .248/.333/.504 with 9 homers and 17 RBI’s. He was in the top of the league in barrel percentage and collected a very solid hard hit rate. Most of his damage came against lefties as he had a 1.048 OPS against the southpaws.

It’s obvious his role is play against the lefties were he thrives. In the scenario for the Mets, Gyorko would likely have to platoon with Guillorme at third. This would leave Davis out, so it won’t be a move the Mets make without any other moves to clear the logjam in the infield.

Davis is a better hitter, but Gyorko main plus over Davis is defense. Since 2017 Gyorko has a very good plus 16 OAA at third base. A clear improvement over Davis. Both Davis and Gyorko hit lefties well, however, Davis has more success against righties and is a young player under team control.

If the Mets decide to trade Davis (as he has some value), adding Gyorko on a cheap one year contract, could be a way to go. He would be a good platoon option if the Mets are willing to go that way.

  1. I’m not sure about this trade Target. I rather see Davis at 3rd and not make a move for the sake of making one. If we are slotting Gyorko in at 3rd, I really hope that we have made an impact trade that would have sent Davis packing or an injury comes to light between now and Spring Training.
