J.D. Davis activated from I.L.

Mets third baseman J.D. Davis has been activated from the 10-Day Injured List. The Mets will in return option Jose Peraza back to the alternate site.

During his 10-day stint on the I.L., Davis only missed six games due to games being postponed.

Stephen Tarpley will also join the Mets during today’s doubleheader as the 27th man on the roster.

Mets notify 6 veterans that they will not make club

Jerry Blevins, Jerad Eickhoff, Caleb Joseph, José Peraza, Mallex Smith and Arodys Vizcaíno have each been notified that they will not be making the Major League roster.

Left-hander Jerry Blevins has announced through Twitter that he’ll be reporting to Brooklyn.

Unfortunately due to some injuries, Vizcaino only made two appearances however hasn’t given up a run.

In addition, Stephen Tarpley will be optioned to Syracuse.

Sleeper Signing: Jose Peraza

Peraza was signed by the Atlanta Braves at 16 years old and at one point was considered one of the top prospects in the organization. The one-time second baseman was once in the Futures Game while now at best, he’ll play the role as utility player with the Mets.

In 2020, Peraza played second base in 27 games, left field in five games, third base for one game and even manned downed shortstop for three games. In 2019, he appeared in 39 games at shortstop while in 2018, he played in 156 games at the same position.

The season of 2018 was Peraza’s biggest and best year of his career, at least in terms of production. He slugged 31 doubles, four triples, and 14 home runs while driving in 58 runs. He also swiped 23 bags that year with the Cincinnati in 632 at-bats.

Baseball Savant

Peraza won’t give the Mets 14 home runs this year, but he’ll provide top of the line defense from off of the bench… if he’s healthy and is given the opportunity.

I imagine that Luis Guillorme has a stronghold on the backing up of the infielders. While it’s likely that Peraza might start off 2021 with not being on the Major League roster, but due to his versatility, he may be one of the first players called up.

And with the utility man only turning 27 years old in the near future, he could and should still have plenty left in the tank.
