Saturday Afternoon Pitching Matchup: Mets vs Giants

After another tough extra inning loss in San Francisco on Friday night, the Mets are back at it again on Saturday afternoon at around 4:05 PM EST with fill-in pitcher Walker Lockett going against “The Shark” Jeff Samardzija.

What would have been a showcase start for an auditioning Zack Wheeler has now instead turned to an auditioning start for Walker Lockett as a temporary replacement for a potentially traded Wheeler.

Locket hasn’t pitched much at the Major League level this season and when he has, he hasn’t exactly been effective. The large framed right hander has an 0-1 record as well as a 11.74 ERA to match, he’s struck out six in 7.2 innings pitched.

However, Jeff Samardzija is another Trade candidate that’s taking the hill and the veteran right hander is on 3-start stretch in which he owns a 1.66 ERA and 17 strikeouts while only walking three.

Overall, Samardzija has a 3.93 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a win/loss record of 7-7 with 89 strikeouts in 105.1 innings pitched. Another good start from Samardzija could net the Giants a decent return for the righty, if he is in fact on the trading block.

The Mets will send down Jacob Rhame in order to make room for Lockett.

Tuesday Night Lineup: Mets vs Phillies

  1. McNeil RF
  2. Alonso 1B
  3. Canó 2B
  4. Conforto CF
  5. Frazier 3B
  6. D. Smith LF
  7. Ramos C
  8. Rosario SS
  9. Lockett RHP

Walker Lockett will try and redeem himself from his debut with the Mets. This may be Lockett’s last start before Syndergaard is back in the rotation, however, there is no real timetable. Lockett is 0-1 with a 23.24 ERA in his total of 2.1 innings pitched.

Jake Arrieta might be putting things back together in Philadelphia as he put together back-to-back quality starts his last 2 times out. The veteran right hander is 6-6 with a 4.12 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in in 91.2 innings.

Thursday Night Pitching Matchup: Mets vs Cubs

The Mets will call up right handed pitcher Walker Lockett to spot start for Noah Syndergaard while he’s on the Injured List.

The Mets acquired Lockett from the Cleveland Indians for Kevin Plawecki during the off-season.

The right hander only has four starts with Syracuse due to starting the season with an arm injury that kept him on the shelf for six weeks but was sporting a 3.28 ERA before getting the call-up.

Tyler Chatwood has been working out of the bullpen and with Kyle Hendricks down and out with a right shoulder injury, Chatwood will be making the spot start. Chatwood owns a 3-1 record, 3.60 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and 29 strikeouts in 35 innings pitched and 17 games. He righty has a 2.87 ERA in his last 15 appearances.

Mets to name Syndergaard’s replacement against Cubs

Noah Syndergaard was removed from his last start and has been placed on the 10-Day Injured List so Syracuse Mets’ righty Walker Lockett will get call up and the nod to take on Tyler Chatwood and the Chicago Cubs.
